TRANSPORTATION AND AIRPORT INFORMATION

José María Córdova International Airport (MDE): Located in Rionegro, 24 km (15 miles) from Medellín.

Getting To/From the Airport

Taxi: White airport taxis with fixed rates to Medellín (30-45 min drive).

🚨 Uber & Ride-Sharing Apps: What You Need to Know

Uber operates in Medellín but exists in a legal gray area due to government regulations favoring traditional taxi services.

Potential Risks:

If an Uber driver is stopped by authorities, they may ask you to sit in the front seat to appear as if you’re a friend rather than a paying passenger. In some cases, rides may be canceled if drivers feel uncomfortable with certain pickup locations.

Alternative Ride-Sharing Apps:
✅ DiDi – Also widely used and sometimes cheaper.

Safer Option: If concerned, ask your hotel to arrange a taxi from a reliable company.

WEATHER AND PACKING TIPS

☀️ Weather: 22°C (72°F) year-round, occasional rain showers.

Packing Essentials:
✅ Light, breathable clothing for warm days
✅ A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings
✅ Rain gear (small umbrella or waterproof jacket)
✅ Comfortable walking shoes (Medellín has hills!)

HEALTH AND VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure you are up-to-date on standard vaccines (MMR, tetanus, flu).

Yellow Fever: Recommended if traveling to national parks or jungle areas.

Health Precautions: Stick to bottled or treated water, and avoid consuming ice unless you’re sure of the source.

SAFETY TIPS

General Safety: Medellín is much safer than in the past, but always remain aware of your surroundings.

Avoid "Dar Papaya": A Colombian phrase meaning don't flash valuables (phones, jewelry, cash) in public.

Transportation Safety: Use registered taxis, ride-sharing apps, or hotel-arranged transport rather than hailing cabs on the street.

MONEY AND PAYMENTS

Currency: Colombian Peso (COP)

ATMs: Available in most urban areas — use machines inside malls or banks for security.

Credit Cards: Accepted in most places, but cash is recommended for small businesses, taxis, and markets.

Tip: Consider carrying a small “decoy” wallet with a small amount of cash to deter potential pickpockets.
